Celebrate National Pie Day Today!

Today is National Pie Day, and we couldn’t let such a delicious event pass us by. Most people’s minds immediately go to their holiday favorites–apple pie, pumpkin pie, or maybe a little pecan pie. For summertime, we of course have blueberry pie. But we like to go outside the box when we cook, as you may know from our international recipes, and so if you’re up for celebrating National Pie Day today, we’ve got a few ideas for savory AND sweet pies to try!

And while you can, of course, buy your pie dough at the grocery store, if you’re looking for a winter weekend project, how about making your own? This video gives you step by step instructions to the perfect pie dough.

Savory Pies

Shepherd’s Pie: This hearty “pie” uses mashed potatoes as its crust. Yum! It’s a filling one-dish meal that is easy to make and delicious. A true meat and potatoes dish that you can probably make with the ingredients you have in your pantry tonight!

Curried Chicken Pot Pie: This isn’t your mama’s chicken pot pie. Liven up this dish with delicious curry and get an additional nutritional boost from cauliflower and green beans in place of traditional carrots and peas.

Seven Layer Tortilla Pie: A Mexican pie? Swap tortillas for crust and fill it with spicy vegetables and fiber-rich black beans (all topped with delicious cheese, of course) and this one is better than nachos.

Tomato Tart: This simple, healthful Italian dish has all the flavors of pizza in a slightly altered form. This is a great pie for the family to enjoy, and it puts the emphasis on the tomatoes over the cheese.

Sweet Pies

Strawberry Ice Box Pie: Skip the traditional crust and get a crunchy graham cracker base in this take on a classic pie. Instead of a pie top, there’s whipped cream for a lighter tasting dessert.

Honey Pine Nut Pie: We love putting traditionally savory ingredients into a sweet pie. This is a sophisticated, crunchy pie that utilizes those pine nuts you’re not sure what to do with. Yum!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie: Chocolate lovers might think they should steer away from pie in favor of cake, but not so! This one is not for those on a diet, with a rich chocolate peanut butter cream cheese filling and a yummy graham cracker crust.

Salted Caramel Pumpkin Pie: This version relies on the old favorite pumpkin pie flavor with the twist of salted caramels. Salted caramel sauce makes this easy to make while still providing new flavors.

Take a SLICE of time today to make (or buy!) your favorite pie and enjoy!
